Uncovered Shorts Insights: Dec 3rd
S&P Cities, Stellantis factories, Economic Complexity, Fast food unit sales
Uncovered Shorts aims to be as educational as possible. Which can be tough when players range from high school students to retired Wall Street lifers. When there are questions like the complexity ranking from yesterday, I hope it gets people thinking about the economies of various countries in a different way.
LJM led the newest leaderboard - The Yoots of 28th Street. TJD led DelCo D’ohs by a single point over PIQ 363-362. NJA led the Hoosiers with a 382. JSO had a 365 for The Salty Scalers. CDS beat JLD by 3pts to win WacSibio’s board. KGT (378) and RLB (363) both scored quite well for Team KR. HKB led PJT Finance with a 361. Tom beat Brian, Tyler, and Ryan on PH-A. Cities with 5 or more S&P 500 companies HQed there - Austin was the most popular incorrect answer. Dell’s HQ is about 20 miles north of Austin in Round Rock and that would be their 5th. Some of the best answers were Pittsburgh, San Diego, Charlotte, San Jose, and…Dublin. Wait, what? Yep, Dublin, Ireland. Accenture as an example - their global HQ is in Dublin, but their equity trades on the NYSE and therefore is eligible to be part of the S&P 500.
Stellantis factory locations - I was hoping people would think about the many heritage European brands that Stellantis owns, which have factories all over Europe. Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Opel, Peugeot, and Citroen vehicles are made basically all over Europe - Spain, Serbia, Poland, the UK, Italy, France, Germany, Czech Republic - these were all solid answers.
Economic Complexity Rankings - Japan was the best answer - and it makes sense. When you look at the Nikkei, there are about 60 companies in the highly complex electronic component or chemicals industries. The same idea holds for #2 Switzerland - pharmaceuticals, specialized machinery, and one writeup even references their watch industry. Lastly, a thank you to Nik and Derek - two players who reached out early morning yesterday and said this question could have been worded better.
Fast food chain with the highest per store sales - Chick-fil-A was the best and most popular answer. About 40% of players got 100pts on this question. Every potential answer was chosen at least once - with Panera Bread, Krispy Kreme, and Whataburger being answered by 1 player each. Whataburger was actually the 4th best answer. Raising Cane’s and Shake Shack were #2 / #3 and got about 5% of the answers.
