As a former JPM employee, I still have a soft spot for Jamie Dimon. At the Morgan Stanley US Financials Conference yesterday, Dimon pointed to fading government stimulus and shifting economic indicators as signs that a slowdown could be on the horizon.
While job growth and consumer spending have remained resilient into 2025, Dimon noted that confidence among both consumers and businesses is starting to waver. He cautioned that the much-anticipated “soft landing” for the economy may not be as smooth as hoped, with potential for rising inflation and a slight dip in employment.
We did a summary on private credit recently…which Dimon also flagged as a risk along with the impact of reduced immigration.
GFG of the Sowing Discord board was 8th overall at 377, beating out Charles’ strong score. CAD led a very strong Palm Beach group at 375, beating out Derek and MEW, who tied at 352, Todd came in 8th on their board. SLL topped the 901 board on the day, while CTX barely beat out LHP to lead Q Uncovered. Triple Levered JTEK showed up, with YEP (374) beating out WIN and MMS. WacSibio was led by THM with a 352, while SCJ and MFM tied at 321. Anthony led The Rosen Report with a 350. SMH was the leader for The Needle Ds, and APD topped the Rothman Boys board at 312.
Top 10 stop 10 country by CO2 emissions - Basically if you went any correct answer besides China or India, you scored well. Even the US scored almost 90. The best answer was Iran - top 20 in both land area and population, plus an oil producer - that was a great choice. Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Germany, and Japan…the last two being the 3rd and 5th largest economies.
8 lowest firearms death rates - Vermont only had 84 deaths from firearms last year…but it has a small population, so that was only good for the 11th lowest rate. Wyoming and Alaska are pretty close to Vermont in population and had 124 and 164 deaths by firearms during the same period. New Jersey and New York were both good answers.
Next largest source of federal spending after social security - I was positive the answer to this had to be net interest on debt, while over 50% of players went with Defense spending. Instead, the best answer was healthcare. Here is a handy chart from the US Treasury website of the top 5 categories
America's cheapest new car available in 2025 - The base model of the Nissan Versa, the Versa S with a 5-speed manual transmission, starts at $17,190. I was surprised this came under $20k. The Nissan Versa is so affordable primarily because it is produced in Mexico, specifically at Nissan’s Aguascalientes facility, where it is built alongside other cost-effective models like the Sentra (the #2 answer at $21,590) and Kicks. The Kia K4 was the most popular answer, but starts at $21,990.
